Sonny Dykes is the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach for the University of Arizona Wildcats football team. Coach Dykes joined the Wildcats program in 2007 from Texas Tech University where he was the assistant coach under Mike Leach. Sonny Dykes has also held an assistant coaching position at the University of Kentucky with the Kentucky Wildcats football program. Many of his former players have gone onto play football professionally and have noted that Coach Dykes’ leadership helped them to get where they are. Former Texas Tech Red Raider Carlos Francis played for Sonny Dykes at TTU and went on to be a 4th round draft pick by the Oakland Raiders in 2004. Derek Dorris another former player went to the NFL to play for the New York Giants.
With such an impressive history and record for player success, great hopes were placed on Sonny Dykes’ coaching ability by the rest of the football program staff when he arrived in Arizona. Coach Dykes did not disappoint. During the 2007 season, he led the Arizona Wildcats to a Number 10 finish nationally in passing yards, boosting the Arizona Wildcat’s offensive output to 130 yards per game.
